Precious Scores Big At Box Office

The graphic new drama Precious made $1.8 million at the box office this past weekend -- and while that may not seem impressive, it is.

The film opened in limit release - playing in only 18 theaters across the country. That means on average, Precious earned a staggering $100,000 per theater.

Precious -- based on the acclaimed novel Push by Sapphire -- follows the heartbreaking story of an overweight teenage girl in Harlem who suffers horrifying abuse at the hands of her parents.

While the subject matter of Lee Daniels' flick Precious is nothing to take lightly, A-list stars turned up the glamour for the film's Hollywood premiere on Sunday.

The flick, about a teen mother struggling with a monstrously abusive mother, boasts cast like Mariah, Robin Thicke's wife Patton, breakout star Gabourey Sidibe, Sherri Shephard and Mo'nique.

Perry, 40, said he recalled the horrific details of his childhood after watching Precious, a film he co-produced with Oprah Winfrey that documents a teen girl's struggles along the same lines.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: It's Still Shining On Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

The family-favorite animated frolic, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is number one at the box office for the second week in a row.  It pulled in an estimated $24.6 million in ticket sales.  The Bruce Willis sci-fi flick, Surrogates, limped into second place with $15 million. 

Fame
has no chance of achieving the popularity of the TV series that inspired it.  The song-and-dance movie took in $10 million for third place.  Matt Damon's The Informant! came in fourth with an estimated $6.9 million in box office receipts. Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself is still going strong and placed fifth this weekend with another $4.75 million in ticket sales.

The remainder of the top 10:  Pandorum is dead-on arrival, taking in only $4.4 million its opening weekend.  Love Happens: $4.3 million; Jennifer's Body: $3.5 million; 9: $2.8 million; and Inglorious Basterds: $2.7 million.

Tyler Perry reigned supreme at the box office this weekend. I Can Do Bad All By Myself, which he directed and starred in along with Taraji P. Henson (Oscar-nominated for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) pulled in $24,030,000.  It was a long way down to number two.  That spot went to Tim Burton's animated action-adventure flick, 9, which took in $10,856,000.  Brad Pitt's Inglorious Basterds was in third place.  It is still performing better than expected and sold another $6,546,000 in tickets.  All About Steve fell off almost 50 percent from last weekend, earning only $5,800,000.  Fifth place went to The Final Destination with $5,500,000 in ticket sales.



The remainder of the top 10:  Sorority Row - $$5,628,000; Whiteout -$5,100.000; District 9 - $3,600,000; Julie & Julia - $3,300,000; Gamer - $3,150,000.

Costar Says Janet Jackson's Back To Work

After two harrowing weeks dealing with the death of her brother Michael, singer and actress Janet Jackson is back to work on her latest film.

Malik Yoba, Jackson's love interest in 2007's Tyler Perry film Why Did I Get Married?, took to his audio blog Saturday on location for the Married sequel, saying that Jackson was back on the Atlanta, Ga. set.

"For those of you who are curious about the state of Ms. Jackson, all seems well," Yoba said.

"She's here at work and we've got a couple of serious scenes to shoot today."

Yoba also indicated that the cast will shoot for another week in Georgia, then head to the Bahamas for more filming.

Tyler Perry is boldly going where no man has gone before. Not drag... Space!

J.J. Abrams --director of the upcoming $150 million dollar Star Trek movie -- went out on a limb to cast Perry in the film.  Perry is, of course, best known for his hilarious gender-bending turns as Madea on the big screen, but he's never appeared in a movie apart from his own.

In Star Trek, the 39-year-old, hulking 6 ft 5inch actor plays straight-laced Admiral Richard Barnett.
