Former New York University professor José Angel Santana is suing the university in Manhattan Supreme Court, asking to get his job back after he claims he was unfairly fired for giving A-list student James Franco a 'D' in his course.

Santana said he gave the former Oscars host the poor mark after he was absent for 12 of the 14 Directing the Actor II classes he was taking in his master's program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

“The school has bent over backwards to create a Franco-friendly environment, that’s for sure,” the 58-year-old educator told the NY Post. “The university has done everything in its power to curry favor with James Franco."

“I hosted last December and it was such a great experience and there were so many unexpected things about it that I thought a documentary would be perfect to highlight it all,” Franco told RadarOnline.com at the bash, sponsored by Diesel’s new Be Stupid campaign.

EXCLUSIVE: Why James Franco Is Doing General Hospital

“For example, since it’s a live show if you have two sketches in a row, you have to change really fast. When you host, you don’t realize you’re going to be yanked across the stage after one sketch ends and you have four or five people undressing you,” he said, sipping a vodka and water.  “The clothes all have velcro, so one person will pull your shirt off, another will pull your pants off, and someone else swaps your wig and facial hair. It's nerve-wracking and a little surreal to have all these people working on you. And – since it’s live - if you aren’t ready in time, you’re kinda screwed.”

Franco says that the genesis of the project came courtesy of a school assignment at NYU Film School, where the actor is currently taking classes. “Our task the first year was to make a five minute documentary, and I immediately thought of doing SNL. [Executive Producer] Lorne Michaels gave me such great access to the show, it was unprecedented,” Franco said. “He’d never given this much access to anyone and he let us film everything. We shot it in one week, from Monday to the airdate on Saturday night, and got the writing process down to rehearsals. John Malkovich was the host when we filmed and he was great and let us shoot the whole process.”

Franco’s documentary is set to premiere at South By Southwest Film Festival in March.
