After their interpretations of Elton John fell flat with the judges, both Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo were eliminated on Thursday's edition of American Idol, as judges had to send home two contestants to make up for last week's dramatic save of Casey Abrams on a night 55 million votes were counted, a record for this stage in the competition.
On Wednesday's show, Adedapo performed John's hit I'm Still Standing, while Megia sang the ballad Daniel. The bottom three on Thursday's show were Megia, the high school student from Mountain House, California; Adedapo, a dance instructor from Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and perhaps surprisingly, Paul McDonald, a quirky singer from Nashville, Tennessee.

Pia Toscano and Stefano Langone were among the clear standouts on Wednesday's edition of American Idol, as each delivered rousing performances on a night the show's 12 remaining contestants had to perform songs released the year they were born.
Langone -- a wild card contestant -- delivered a powerful performance of Simply Red's 1989 ballad If You Don't Know Me By Now. His set Wednesday was lauded by judge Randy Jackson, who said the 22-year-old Kent, Washington native "took a song with the highest degree of difficulty and slayed it."
Toscano, 22, also kept her momentum strong, unfurling a sterling rendition of Whitney Houston's Where Do Broken Hearts Go, from 1988. Judge Steven Tyler, impressed by the the New York native's recent string of strong outings, told Toscano, "You are why this show is called 'American Idol.’”

On Thursday's American Idol, the 24 remaining contestants were whittled down to ten finalists by more than 40 million viewer votes, and in a surprising move, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez each got to save someone with a wild card pick, leaving 13 young talents competing for this season's crown. Earlier, everyone thought there would be just two wild cards.

The top ten contestants, as determined by voters, included boys Scotty McCreery, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams and Paul McDonald; and girls Pia Toscano, Lauren Alaina, Karen Rodriguez, Thia Megia and Haley Reinhart.
That brought us to the real suspense of the night, as three lucky contestants would be selected by the judges to get another shot at following in the footsteps of past winners such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

On Wednesday's American Idol, the second of three episodes airing this week, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez checked out the dozen remaining girls, and Pia Toscano stole the show with a jarring rendition of The Pretenders' I'll Stand By You, radiating the same kind of star power Kelly Clarkson did in the show's inaugural season.
After her performance, the entire audience -- including the judges -- stood up and gave Toscano, a 22-year-old New Yorker, a standing ovation for her power ballad.
