If you’ve read all the hype about the musical drama Smash and you think it’s another Glee, Katharine McPhee says think again.

The American Idol runner-up says the new series – which premieres on NBC Monday – is nothing like the FOX network hit.

“[I’m] not saying that one is better than the other…” she tells Celebuzz, “They’re just totally different shows.”

The legal dramas for the executors of Michael Jackson’s are continuing to mount after the theater production company Nederlander Presentations filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the group on Friday afternoon.

Company Sues Website Over Sale Of Michael Jackson Items

The court papers, which were exclusively obtained by RadarOnline.com, claim that John Branca, John McClain and 10 other unnamed defendents have broken a contact the King of Pop signed in October 2008 when plans were set in stone to produce a Broadway musical based on his iconic hit, Thriller (referred to as ‘The Play’ in the documents).

COURT DOCUMENTS: Read The Lawsuit

Nederlander Productions alleges that Jackson penned new songs and musical compositions for the show but McClain and Branca have not handed over to them.

The plaintiff is attempting to legally obtain the previously-unheard songs in the hope that the musical can still hit Broadway in 2011 as Jackson planned.

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Rosario Dawson Says Vanessa Hudgens Doesn't Need Advice For Sexy New Role

Posted on Jun 16, 2010 @ 03:40PM - 1 comment

Vanessa Hudgens is going to tackle her biggest role so far this summer when she plays Mimi, the HIV-positive dancer in Rent. Despite Hudgens being best known for playing sugary sweet characters, Rosario Dawson- who brought Mimi to life in the 2005 film version of the musical- says the young actress is perfect for the provocative role.

“She’s feisty, she’s fun, and I’ve been encouraging her to let that part of her come out because it’s a dynamic role,” Rosario told RadarOnline.com’s Katie Krause at Reebok’s Women’s Fitness Event in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

“We’ve actually been talking which has been really, really great...I adore her, I think she’s really awesome.”

Hudgens, who shot to fame as innocent Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical franchise, will have an advantage going into the production. “She has a little bit more of a benefit going into it. She’s already a singer and she’s been on a huge stage and performed in front of a bunch of people,” Dawson explained. Hudgens’ Rent run will go from August 6 to August 8 at the Hollywood Bowl. It will be directed by her Beastly co-star Neil Patrick Harris.

“It’s a fun, juicy role and it’s like in your face,” she added. “So I’m like ‘don’t hold anything back, show us what you got’ and I think she’s going to!”

Rosario downplays the need to give Hudgens any advice, saying she is in awe of what the 21-year old is going to accomplish.

“I also felt bad because the movie version- we had fewer songs to sing. She’s gotta do the entire show, so it wasn’t even so much advice as it was super appreciation of like, ‘you’re doing so much more than I had to do!’

“I think she’s just gonna kick butt.”

Joining a slew of other formidable rock groups who have turned their hits into narratives for the stage--Green Day threw their hat in the ring on Wednesday night with the world premiere of their musical American Idiot.

Armstrong and his bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool showed to the Berkeley Repertory Theater in Berkeley, Ca., where Levi's helped the trio ring in their big night.

Cool and Dirnt took front and center seats for the debut, buzzing with friends and loves ones about their excitement over the Michael Mayer-directed show (of Spring Awakening fame).

Armstrong chose to stick in the wings, leading a champagne toast afterwards.

"Punk is about taking chances," Armstrong said, certainly the case for the songwriter who took his first stab at dramatic arts, writing the book for the musical.

"Green Day's American Idiot album has had a profound impact on music and culture, and this show has the potential to revolutionize modern theatre," Levi's VP of Brand Marketing Doug Sweeny told us.

True to the band's roots, the after-party featured a barber chair where Billie Joe himself jumped behind the chair and created mohawks on two crowd goers.

While others may have gotten cuts, it's the band that should truly be buzzed. American Idiot runs at the Berkeley Rep through the end of November, with aspirations of hitting broadway.
