In a year full of high-profile shake-ups in the news business -- Meredith Vieira left the Today Show, while Katie Couric left CBS Evening News -- perhaps the biggest shock came Friday, when longtime CBS News anchor Harry Smith announced he's departing the network for NBC after a 25-year run.

Smith is reportedly slated to work alongside Brian Williams for the new prime-time news show debuting on the Peacock Network during the 2011-12 season.

Smith co-anchored The Early Show up until last November; he'd also worked on CBS This Morning and CBS Evening News.

On her last day Wednesday, The Today Show paid homage to outgoing anchor Meredith Vieira.

In a montage of highlights from Vieira's 5-year run, we saw her interviewing movers and shakers like Pres. Barack Obama, Lady Gaga, Jerry Seinfeld and Donald Trump, among others.

We also saw Vieira covering key historical events like 2007’s Virginia Tech massacre, Michael Phelps’ domination of the 2008 Olympics and Michael Jackson's 2009 death. In addition, we saw how she was a key factor in the unlikely success of the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

It’s official: The Today Show’s Meredith Vieira announced she’s leaving NBC's top-rated national morning show on Monday.

“This is a difficult day for me,” she said. “I’m going to try to hold myself together here. But after months of personal reflection and private conversations between my family and my friends, I've decided to leave Today in June.

“I’ve really had a great time, but time is one of those weird things you can never get enough of it. And it just keeps ticking away and I know that I want to spend more of mine with my husband, Richard, and my kids Ben, Gabe and Lily.”

After success at both NBC and CBS, could Katie Couric's next stop be ABC?

Couric, according to reports, is on the verge of inking a $20 million pact with the network that would include a talk show, as well as a working relationship with their news division.

At the heart of the deal is a weekday talk show that would begin airing next year; under the new deal, she'd also get her own specials, as well as an occasional spot on 20/20.

It's official: Veteran journalist Scott Pelley will replace Katie Couric as the lead anchor of the CBS Evening News, the network said Tuesday.

Pelley is “among the very best reporters ever to work at CBS News,” the network's news chairman Jeff Fager said. "We like to think of CBS News as the 'reporter's network' and I can't think of anybody in this business better suited for the anchor chair than Scott."

Couric is wrapping up the $75 million, five-year deal she signed in 2006.

Ann Curry will replace Meredith Vieira at the helm of The Today Show.

The 54-year-old Curry, the New York Times reported, will likely take over the job next month. She's been the show's news anchor for 14 years.

The Today Show's 9 am anchor Natalie Morales takes over Curry's news spot, while White House correspondent / MSNBC personality Savannah Guthrie will take over the 9 am anchor slot.

The Today Show’s Meredith Vieira, tired of the early mornings and wanting to spend more time with her family, is expected to part ways with NBC's top-rated national morning show when her contract expires this fall, RadarOnline.com has learned.

According to a report from TV Guide, Vieira is speaking with the network about extending the one-year, $11 million contract she signed last year, but no agreement has been reached.
