REVIEW: Couples Retreat
Posted on Oct 09, 2009 @ 08:31AM - Add a comment

If fixing relationships was as easy as flying to the tropics, facing adversity and washing it down with a yummy, fruity cocktail, couples could weather anything.
Sadly, real life isn’t anything like the intermittently comical, easy paradise of Couples Retreat. The adventures kick off when the uptight Cynthia (Kristen Bell) and Jason (Jason Bateman) admit that they’re on the brink of divorce, and convince three other couples to join them on a holiday to save their marriage. Only a group rate will allow them to go, so with some guilt-tripping and promises of jet-skis and sunshine, it’s off to “Eden” -- aka The Most Boring Place on Earth.
Watch Couples Retreat Movie Trailer
There, the couples are inexplicably forced to follow the island’s treatment program, which includes sunrise meetings with guru Marcel (Jean Reno), therapy sessions (the dress code evokes Star Trek, if Kirk and Uhura were sushi chefs) and wacky group exercises that involve everything from dropping trou to sexy-time yoga. Instead of fun in the sun, the vacation becomes a new-age Guantanamo where everyone’s problems bubble up, and all four couples -- including our doomed, pinched-face pair -- unravel amid the palm trees.
Despite the exotic setting, Couples Retreat takes aim at the most basic issues we face once we’ve traded party-hopping for trips to Home Depot: growing apart, bedroom boredom, conception struggles and balancing domestic duties with romantic urges. In the hands of stars like Faizon Love (Shane), Malin Akerman (Ronnie) and Vince Vaughn (Dave), each couple’s troubles are relatable and, mostly, funny. When Cynthia and Jason queue up a powerpoint preso to explain their marriage problems -- and graphically quantify the potential effects of divorce -- you don’t have to be a white-collar veteran to crack up. Up-and-comer Kali Hawk (Trudy), meanwhile, is like an energy elixir, perking up scenes that sag beneath heavy-handed antics.
Yet, as Dave repeats throughout the movie, relationships take work. Some of them have fault lines so deep that not even island rum and one-liners can fill the cracks. Lucy (Kristin Davis) and Joey (Jon Favreau, who also co-wrote the film), for example, seethe with the kind of latent anger and suffer battle wounds so fresh that, despite incredible delivery of tight banter, broad comedy can’t quite support them. While Couples Retreat strives to guide us from tenderness to hilarity and back, the characters take on a sit-commy, wooden feel so that, by movie’s end, home-wrecking in paradise doesn’t seem so bad.
Island life, however, isn’t all gloom and doom: Couples Retreat is, to borrow from the film, like an accessible Sandals resort, versus a Club Med’s richer offerings. Vaughn, who also co-wrote and produced the movie, serves as its keel on unpredictable seas, righting the ship with subtlety and timing that are at times genius. The way he pokes fun at all-too-familiar, trying situations allows us to laugh at ourselves, even if Mai Tais and white sand can’t solve everything.
Style Radar: Couples Retreat Premiere

The look was easy and breezy at the Los Angeles premiere of Couples Retreat! Though it was a brisk autumn evening, stars took a fashion vacation, dressed for the tropics in light and bright colors. The movie, which opens Friday, has a star studded cast which includes Malin Ackerman, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis, John Favreau, Jason Bateman, Faizon Love, and Kali Hawk, all of who looked smashing on the carpet.
While Malin Ackerman was pretty in pastel and Kristen Bell shone in silver and blue, Dwight Yoakam added a western flair to his red carpet duds. What did everyone else wear? Check it out in photos!
Style Radar: Faboo or Faux Pas? Williams Sisters Wear It Well!

Wednesday night was filled with fashion fabulosity -- from athletes amping up their look in designer gowns at the ESPY Awards to young Hollywood starlets stepping out in their A looks at Vogue's year anniversary party for the Los Angeles 3.1 Phillip Lim Boutique.

Used to rivaling each other on the courts, the Williams sisters went head-to-head style-wise on the red carpet at the ESPY awards. Venus won our vote for best dressed in an original silk-print chiffon Mara Hoffman gown and a fabulously feminine hairdo. Serena was a close-runner-up in a teal gown that was both classy and for all the jocks in the room, quite cleavage-y too! Just like on the court, Venus came out on top.
You can't have an award show in Los Angeles without bringing out some A-list movie stars, and Demi Moore fit the bill. She definitely made a presence in a red-hot Zac Posen number with shoulder cutouts. Orlando Bloom's model girlfriend, Miranda Kerr, also showed her support for the pro-ballers and stunned in a stark white Calvin Klein halter gown.
The fashion fete of the night was Vogue's year anniversary bash for the 3.1 Phillip Lim L.A. Boutique. The affair was speckled with the designer's young Hollywood fans and hosted by O.C. Alum Rachel Bilson, who donned a funky gold metallic short suit. Also drawing on the metallic trend, Gossip Girl Kristen Bell rocked-out in a metallic skirt by the celebrated designer. Shenae Grimes attempted an interesting nude-to-blush polka dot getup and we're thinking it was a 9021 Oh-No choice!
In NYC Taylor Momsen stuck to her trademark black and white look -- while we love her mini and trendy high boots, we are SO over her raccoon-like eye makeup!

Style Radar: Faboo or Faux Pas? Cosmo Mag Party — And Then Some!

Cosmopolitan Magazine held a party at the W Hotel in Los Angeles and young Hollywood stylistas turned out in flirty, girly, and fun summer fashions to stand out in the sea of beauty!

Ashley Greene owned her place as the most stylish Twilight-er, donning an off-the-shoulder floral print Max Azria mini-dress (that will retail for $158 -- hitting stores this December.) Aside from the fuchsia Sergio Rossi clutch, Greene accessorized the busy frock minimally and appropriately.
Also frantic for fuchsia was Kristen Bell, a colorful vision in an oversized-ruffle-collar belted dress, making for a Gossip Girl-like standout look.
Taking a more simple approach for the fashion mag fete, teen-beat Hairspray songstress Amanda Bynes wore a two-tone Pencey strapless cummerbund dress.
Year One beauty Olivia Wilde worked a J. Mendel chiffon dress perfectly befitting for summer, accessorizing in a classic way with a black clutch and peep-toe heels.
Looking like a young Scarlett Johansson, Amber Heard rocked designer of the moment, Alexander Wang, in a white skeleton shoulder top with a similarly inspired black skirt. Our verdict: super-trendy, but not overdone.
In the fashion capital, never-one to miss out on an edgy-look opportunity, Big Love's Chloe Sevigny sported a full-length Proenza Schouler leather, belted jumpsuit for the 9th edition of A Magazine event. Shapely Kelly Ripa lived up to her high-stylin' reputation in a striped pencil skirt, navy tank, and cagey platforms while running around the Big Apple, and Anne Hathaway hit our Radar with her $1,775 (and worth every penny!) turquoise Chanel "Bubble Quilt" bag.

Style Radar: Faboo or Faux Pas? Weekend Round-Up!
Posted on Jun 22, 2009 @ 06:06AM - Add a comment
Mod fashions were front and center north of the border on the style scene this weekend at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Canada, with fabulosity factors ranging from super-stylish to trying-too-hard tragic!
Audrina Patridge hit the affair in an interestingly chic turtleneck black dress with sexy cutouts and sky-high Gucci Iman ankle-strap platforms, while Fergie took a stab at mod in an over-styled -- and just plain over -- getup of: a silver satin top with sheer corset panels, an over-sized chunky bracelet, and Balenciaga strappy pumps.
It's no rumor: Rumer Willis was (again) the worst dressed celeb at the affair, parading around in an out-dated off-the-shoulder black mini with lime green sequin designs (but she did pair the hideous frock with fab gladiator Christian Louboutins). Also wearing Christian Louboutin heels, best dressed of the night Kim Kardashian channeled Marilyn in the hair department while flaunting a curve-clinging geometric print Nuj Novakhett belted black mini-dress. Kelly Clarkson finally found a silhouette that worked for her -- but the color and print didn't work for anyone! Keep trying Kelly!
Showing off skin in Maui, Kristen Bell took in the evening breeze in a plunging cut-out and embellished black bubble-hem mini-dress, while Kristen Cavallari hit up a Jersey shore hot spot, Mur.Mur nightclub, in Atlantic City in a simple and strapless little black dress.
Eliza Dushku also hit our Style Radar in a thick belted black strapless romper in Los Angeles, teaming it up trendy-style with suede peep-toe booties.
