It was part of a vast collection of over 3,500 pieces amassed over a 40 year period and was acquired in 1971 when she bought all of Marilyn's wardrobe after it was sold by 20th Century Fox studio.

Reynolds had attempted to off-load the collection to a museum but could not find somewhere to take it in its entirety.

Other items sold included a dress and a pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland during a screen test for the Wizard Of Oz.  The auction netted an impressive $1.75 million.

Nowhere near what Marilyn's dress sold for, but Charlie Chaplin's bowler hat sold for $135,000.
