The war of words continues between Mel Gibson and Joe Eszterhas.

The veteran screenwriter (Flashdance, Basic Instinct, Sliver) appeared on the Today Show on Friday to discuss his rift with the Hollywood lightning rod made public this week when a scathing letter he penned to The Passion director leaked online, raising the same red flags that have essentially ostracized the one-time A-lister from Hollywood.

Amy Winehouse Funeral Controversy

Amy Winehouse was laid to rest on Tuesday in London with a traditional Jewish ceremony but it's become a controversial topic given the circumstances involved.

Winehouse, 27, was cremated before she was buried and was covered in tattoos - typically two major violations of Jewish law.

According to Rabbi Naftali Silberberg, it is unequivocal that the dead must be buried in the earth.

"As a deterrent measure, cremated remains are not interred in a Jewish cemetery. Furthermore, we are told that many of the traditional laws of mourning are not observed after the passing of an individual whose body was cremated. However, is recited for such individuals, and it is certainly appropriate to give charity and do mitzvot in memory of their souls," the Rabbi writes of Chabad.org.

Religious Jews do not traditionally believe in cremation because their faith tells them that they will be resurrected when the messiah comes, which would be impossible if they have no body.

The Jewish Community Center Chabad In Manhattan Beach, California explains why tattoos are forbidden in the religion.

"A person is comprised of a body and soul which are intrinsically connected. Kabbalah teaches us that what happens to our body effects our soul as well. That is why we must be very careful to take care of our body because 'A small hole in the body creates a great hole in the soul,' When we change the look of our body synthetically by inserting a tattoo we are also affecting our souls.

"While Judaism forbids tattooing it does not place any stigma on someone who has a tattoo, they are no less responsible to fulfill Mitzvot than someone without a tattoo including the Mitzavah of not getting any more tattoos. Contrary to the popular belief, there is no prohibition for a Jew with a tattoo to be buried in a Jewish cemetery and having tattoos on one's body doesn't change the laws involving their Jewish burial in any way."

Tattoos are thought to be a "marking the body" and those with tattoos are not to be buried in Jewish cemetery, although in recent years a line of more progressive-thinking Jews have accepted both tattoos and cremation.

It's unclear who made the decision to have Winehouse's remains cremated or if she had been actively practicing her Jewish faith.

VIDEO: Oksana Blasts Mel: "He's A Liar," Denies Extortion Plot

Posted on Jul 23, 2010 @ 05:15PM - Add a comment

Within the course of just a few seconds Friday, Mel Gibson's former lady love, Oksana Grigorieva, called him a "liar" - not once, but FOUR times - and RadarOnline.com has the video.

Watch the video on RadarOnline.com

Grigorieva - who's engaged in a bitter custody battle with the Oscar winning Braveheart star over their baby daughter Lucia - flatly denied that her sister is the source of the now infamous leaked audio tapes, published exclusively by RadarOnline.com.  In those tapes, Gibson is heard not only berating and threatening Oksana, but he also sprews a fury of profanities and ethic slurs. (A unsubstantiated Web report Thursday accused Oksana's sister of being the source of the leaked tapes.)

In Los Angeles Friday, the Russian-born pop singer - referring to the tapes - said, "She (her sister) doesn't have them. She erased them a long time ago."

When asked why her sister's name has come up regarding the source of the tapes, Oksana angrily responded, "Because Mel is lying. He's lying. There's no extortion, and there's no texts and no emails. He's lying and I'm fighting for my child. He's just a liar, and it will come up in the court, just wait."

VIDEO: Mel Gibson Gets Defensive When Questioned About Anti-Semitic Remarks

Posted on Jan 20, 2010 @ 05:49PM - 37 comments

Mel Gibson became very defensive and almost aggressive during a recent junket interview for his new movie Edge of Darkness when questioned by veteran newscaster Sam Rubin.

In a clip from the interview, shown on KTLA 5 Los Angeles, Gibson is seen being interviewed by Rubin along with co-star Ray Winston.

Rubin says everything started off fine, exchanging pleasantries but then the tone changed when Rubin mentions Gibson's anti-Semitic rant that he went on following his now infamous arrest for drink driving.

Gibson starts out nicely enough talking about his career comeback, saying that this is his first film "in front of the camera" in "7 or 8 years to star in" and explaining that he felt he was getting "a bit stale" and that he chose to "walk away".

But Gibson visibly changes when Rubin says to the devout Catholic actor, "Some people will welcome you back, some people will say you should never come back."

A testy Gibson fires back with, "Why?" And Rubin goes on to explain, "Because of what happened before." "What happened?" Gibson demands. "The remarks that were attributed to you," Rubin says.

Gibson, defensively, and some would say aggressively, replies with, "The remarks that were ATTRIBUTED to me. I didn't necessarily make those comments."

He then goes on to question Rubin, "I gather you have a dog in this fight? Do you have a dog in this fight? Or are you impartial?" Seemingly alluding to the fact that Rubin is Jewish.

According to a leaked police report, when Gibson was arrested for drink driving back on July 28th 2006, he unleashed a bizarre anti-Semitic rant at the Jewish arresting officer, Deputy James Mee.

Allegedly Gibson became aggressive before ranting, "F*****g Jews - Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world" and then asked Deputy Mee, "Are you a Jew?" The police report further alleged that Gibson refused to enter the patrol car and had to be handcuffed.

It is also alleged that he called a female cop "sugar tits".

Gibson's arrest was later expunged from his record, he was given three years probation, a fine and was ordered to attend mandatory alcoholics anonymous meetings.

Following the arrest there was outrage from the Jewish community and many others.

Gibson, whose father told the New York Times that he did not believe the Holocaust happened, issued a statement apologizing. He said: "I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself."

He added: "I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."
