Despite wowing the judges with his rendition of the Journey classic a night before, Santa Cruz native James Durbin was eliminated on Thursday's American Idol results show, making for the 10th season's biggest shocker since the abrupt end of Pia Toscano's run.
The heavy metal singer, 22, was one of the bottom two finalists alongside Scotty McCreery on a night Ryan Seacrest said 72 million voters cast their selections, marking a top-four record.

The pretty Wheeling, Illinois native and the other three remaining contestants had to sing an inspirational song, followed by one from the catalog of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the iconic songwriters who penned most of Elvis Presley's hits.

Will America still love James Durbin tomorrow? Based on his performance Wednesday, he's got nothing to worry about.
The 22-year-old Santa Cruz native wowed judges Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez on American Idol’s Carole King night with his rockin’ rendition of the 1960 chart-topper she penned for The Shirelles, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.
“I thought from the beginning it was magical ... you are going to be the star of the night with that one, it was amazing for me,” Lopez told Durbin, noting his consistency "every week since we started the top 13."

It was lights, camera, action on Wednesday's American Idol, with the Top 8 finalsts all singing songs from movies.
Most of the contestants once again earned high praises from the judges, but perhaps Randy Jackson summed up this season’s mixed bag of talents the best, saying, “It makes me proud to sit here and judge artists as well as pop stars -- the world cannot live by pop stars alone.”
Other interesting plot twists on Wednesday's episode included a pair of contestants going with their artistic gut, against the advice of their show-appointed mentors; and Jennifer Lopez, still reeling from last week's shocking elimination of Pia Toscano, taking a stand for the remaining female finalists, saying, "I don't want any of the girls to go home."

On an evening American Idol paid homage to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the remaining nine contestants all delivered spectacular performances on Wednesday's edition of the Fox hit, as the competition in the show's 10th season heats up to a fever pitch.

The singers picked their songs from the cream of the crop on Wednesday's episode, having to select tracks from artists who've been enshrined in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. All of them stepped up their game, impressing the judges and viewers with one knockout routine after the next.
While the judges got on Pia Toscano a bit for her dance moves (or lack thereof), the New Yorker rocked the house with a sterling rendition of Tina Turner's River Deep - Mountain High, prompting judge Steven Tyler to tell the pretty songstress, "You killed it!"

Jacob Lusk and Naima Adedapo shined bright on what was a night of standouts on American Idol Wednesday, as virtually all of the remaining 11 contestants held their own as the show kicked off its’ annual Motown-themed week.

Adedapo gave a fresh spin to Martha and the Vandellas' classic Dancing in the Street, and at the end of her performance, she broke into an African-inspired dance, garnering rave reviews from all three judges.
"Once again, we see the whole package," Steven Tyler told her, while Jennifer Lopez told her, "You're an exciting performer -- I love watching you -- you definitely have that little extra something on the stage!"
