Movie Review: The Karate Kid

Wham! Bam! Pow! Filled with kung fu fights designed for maximum pain, bad-ass pre-teens and songs from a smokin’-hot soundtrack, this is not your childhood Karate Kid. More than 25 years after Ralph Macchio made “wax on, wax off” a pop culture staple, Jaden Smith steps up as the underdog hero in this fast-paced remake.
This time, there’s no car wax, but life lessons abound nonetheless. The new Karate Kid follows much of the original’s formula, in which a single mom (Taraji P. Henson) and her son, Dre (Smith), move far from home to start a new life. In a nod to the times, the move is recession-driven: There are no more jobs at local Detroit car factories, so mom takes the leap and heads for China.
The vibrant setting couldn’t be better, nor could the pick of a mentor. Jackie Chan plays Mr. Han, the kung fu master who saves Dre’s butt from getting kicked and teaches him how to fight back. The role is arguably Chan’s best ever in an American movie: the kung fu legend actually gets to act. And yes, even Mr. Han has a little tear-jerker of a backstory.
Of course, no underdog movie is complete without a love interest or a final, epic face-off against the ultimate baddie, and The Karate Kid doesn’t disappoint. Instead of a bubbly, all-American babe like the original’s Elisabeth Shue, we get Wenwen Han, who plays the soft-spoken violin prodigy Meiying. And as for the final face-off? Prepare to cringe with every chop, drop and body slam. The Karate Kid’s little fighters are ruthless -- but that doesn’t mean they won’t warm your heart when the final battle is done.
RED CARPET RADAR: Eccentric Attire At The Karate Kid Premiere

At the Los Angeles premiere of The Karate Kid on Monday night, the Smith family showed up to support their newest thespian, Jaden, who costars with Jackie Chan in the classic remake. Jada looked metallically magnificent, wearing an attention-grabbing Rafael Cannamo cocktail dress from the Fall 2010 collection in a gorgeous bronze color, which she paired with haute Pierre Hardy geometric cutout sandals, while the rest of her family opted for unconventional red carpet looks.
Will looked relatively casual in a hooded blazer, while Jaden channeled Michael Jackson in red, black and white Thriller-esque threads. Little Willow sported a nouveau Mohawk with an animalistic ensemble, which was a bit over the top!

Regina King looked amazing in a patterned wrap dress, while Taraji P. Henson looked fab fab fab in a Fall 2010 Naeem Khan dress, which featured mirrored beading.

Extraordinary Measures (PG-13)
With a tag line like “Don’t hope for a miracle. Make one,” there’s no way around this film’s feel-good effect, in a story of parents who will stop at nothing to find a cure for their daughter’s rare disorder. Despite the inspiration overload, Harrison Ford keeps things real as the curmudgeon of a researcher whose help is key to saving the little girl, but needs some convincing before taking the plunge. (Brendan Fraser [John Crowley], Harrison Ford [Dr. Robert Stonehill], Keri Russell [Aileen Crowley])
Invictus (PG-13)
What do rugby and politics have in common? For Nelson Mandela, the so-called gentleman’s sport was a way to rally South Africa in the wake of apartheid, when the former president was fresh out of jail, newly elected and trying to heal a fractured nation. Matt Damon stars as the team captain willing to wear tight shorts and take unpadded poundings for his country, while shouldering the hopes his new leader had for World Cup victory. (Morgan Freeman [Nelson Mandela], Matt Damon [Francois Pienaar])
The Spy Next Door (PG)
It’s a familiar scenario: Tough-guy crime-fighter is suddenly tasked with taking care of little kids, and can’t control them. Cue broad, physical comedy, a man in an apron and lots of burnt food. This time, martial arts master Jackie Chan is the unfortunate babysitter mired in domestic awfulness, until a new assignment lets him turn his pre-pubescent agitators into bad-ass assistants. (Jackie Chan [Bob Ho], Amber Valletta [Gillian], Billy Ray Cyrus [Colton James])
Movie Review : Letters To Juliet
Valentine’s Day (PG-13)
Stars from Julia Roberts to Taylor Lautner assemble for a film about America’s most stressful day of the year. Despite everyone’s Hollywood looks and adorable one-liners, no one’s relationship is what is what it seems, and the truth comes out as holiday hype sends each character into over-drive. (Jessica Alba [Morley Clarkson], Bradley Cooper [Holden], Topher Grace [Jason], Ashton Kutcher [Reed Bennett] and many more)

Stars were scattered around New York City and Los Angeles, dressed in terrific and tacky trends. In New York City, Jennifer Connelly stopped by to visit David Letterman, looking like she just stepped off the Balenciaga Spring 2010 runway, completely threaded in the designer's duds. Nearby, Snooki hit MTV Studios, wearing her favorite bedazzled trucker hat, Coach Bag and Bebe belted coat with a leopard dress over sweatpants, adding UGG slippers for a final touch!
Stars like Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Beals and Taraji P. Henson flocked to the Los Angeles premiere of The Book of Eli, while George Clooney took his stunning girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis to the 2009 New York Film Critics Circle Awards in New York City, where they were surrounded with an evening of bad fashion.

The red carpet's most fashionable season got off to a disappointing start at The People's Choice Awards on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, where stars showed off too much skin, stained gowns and pantylines! Gossip mom Kelly Rutherford's embellished Jenny Packham gown, barely covered up the twins, while Sofia Vergara's strapless from the Olsen's The Row was so skintight her panty line was clearly visible.

As for the boys, Christian Slater had us mourning in all black, while hot Vamp Kellan Lutz to was too casual for the carpet, wearing dark denim with a metallic blue blazer.
