Five former New Orleans police officers have been sentenced to between five and 65 years in prison for shooting innocent people in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The ex-cops were accused of shooting the unarmed civilians on the Danziger Bridge on September 4, 2005, six days after the deadly storm devastated the Louisiana city, CNN.com reported.

Brad Pitt is back in New Orleans for a big Make It Right Foundation fundraiser, and his good pal Ellen DeGeneres is one of the stars taking part.

On Friday, the Moneyball star showed the talk show host -- who recently purchased his oceanfront house in Malibu -- around the hard hit Lower 9th Ward, where Pitt's foundation is in the process of building150 new homes.

One thing’s for certain – Brad Pitt will never go hungry while he is in New Orleans.

The superstar is greatly loved for his tireless efforts to help rebuild the city following devastating Hurricane Katrina, especially by Melba Leggett Barnes, who was presented with a new home by Pitt - and she has extended him an open invitation to drop by anytime for some of her ‘Big Easy’ home recipes RadarOnline.com can reveal.

Pitt is currently in New Orleans filming his latest movie Cogan’s Trade where he plays a cold-blooded mob enforcer.

But in real life the famous actor is a hero to Barnes and her neighbors in the Lower 9th Ward where his Make It Right Foundation has built dozens of new homes in the area which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Pitt and his famous partner Angelina Jolie and their kids have all visited Melba and her husband Baxter Barnes several times at their new home and they all love her cooking.

Hollywood megastar Brad Pitt and the charitable foundation he helped create donated more than $24 million in 2009 to survivors of Hurricane Katrina to help them secure mortgages for new homes, RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned.

What's more, Pitt and Co. were able to raise an additional $20 million for the people of New Orleans, who continue to rise from the ruins more than five years after the natural disaster.

According to tax forms obtained by RadarOnline.com, the Make It Right Foundation's assets soared from $19,781,522 to $40,781,113 in 2009 -- a gain of $20 million.

Brad Pitt has vowed never to turn his back on his adopted city of New Orleans, and RadarOnline.com has exclusive new details of the actor's visit there this weekend to mark the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The Benjamin Button star attended various events in The Big Easy to mark the anniversary of Katrina, including attending a private party in the lower Ninth Ward where his Make It Right Foundation has been building new homes since the disaster devastated the area.

And the multi-millionaire star took time-out to tell local resident and his friend, Melba Leggett Barnes, that he’s committed to seeing the project through and helping with New Orleans’ regeneration.

Five years after Hurricane Katrina, Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock was in New Orleans Sunday at a high school she helped rebuild for the opening of its on-campus health clinic, RadarOnline.com has learned.

"We're here to celebrate an anniversary and though that might be hard for some, I choose to emphasize the word 'celebrate.' Sometimes tragedies bring out the very best in people and it's one of the reasons why we stand in this school of excellence today," Bullock said to more than 100 people who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Warren Easton Charter High School.

Bullock, along with other charitable donors, helped raise $700,000 for the new facility.

Pitt, through his Make It Right Foundation, has focused on building eco-friendly homes for those displaced by the devastation. In 2006, they commissioned 13 architects to build the affordable home.

Part of his mission is to build awareness about the ongoing struggle survivors face. To that end, he also slipped in time to do a special televised interview with Brian Williams.

Looking relaxed and happy to be in New Orleans, Pitt smiled and waved at fans and a crowd of locals who stopped to see the movie star in action.

“New Orleans still has a long way to go to get back from Katrina but things are moving in the right direction thanks to guys like Brad Pitt,” Baxter Barnes, who received a home from Make It Right and has spent time with both Pitt and Angelina Jolie, told RadarOnline.com exclusively. “They are both genuine and down-to-earth people and if were not for them we, like a lot of other people, would not have homes back in New Orleans.”
