Two high profile organizations, GLAAD and Human Rights Campaign, are speaking out against a new ABC comedy before the show even hits the air.

Work It, a sitcom set to premiere Jan. 3, revolves around two unemployed car salesmen played Ben Koldyke, Amaury Nolasco, who after their dealership shuts down, dress as women so they can get jobs as salespeople at a pharmaceutical company looking to hire female sales reps.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the HRC both say the comedy reflects negative transgender stereotypes.

The HRC is urging supporters to send emails asking the network to not “air a show that reinforces negative and damaging stereotypes about transgender people.”

The show doesn't claim to depict transgender people, and in fact the network has called it an updated version of Bosom Buddies, but the two groups don't see the humor.

"Transphobia is still all too prevalent in our society and this show will only contribute to it,” GLAAD acting president Mike Thompson said in a statement on the organization's website.

“It will reinforce the mistaken belief that transgender women are simply ‘men pretending to be women,’ and that their efforts to live their lives authentically as women are a form of lying or deception.”

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW: Kathy Griffin To March On DC Over "Don’t Ask Don’t Tell"; Talks Backlash Over Sarah Palin Joke

Posted on Mar 14, 2010 @ 07:58AM - 14 comments

Kathy Griffin was honored Saturday night by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) at its star studded gala at the Hyatt Century Plaza in Los Angeles, and RadarOnline.com was on the red carpet talking to the outrageous red-headed comedienne.

The always outspoken Griffin – who was given the HRC Ally For Equality Award for her work on behalf of the LGBT community –broke the news to RadarOnline.com that she will be traveling to Washington, D.C. this week on behalf of the HRC.

“We’re going to do a really exciting protest on Thursday, March 18th on behalf of overturning Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Griffin told us exclusively.

We also asked Kathy about her recent trip, along with Levi Johnston, to Alaska to film an episode of her Emmy Award winning reality TV series, My Life On The D-List -- a story first reported on RadarOnline.com.

We wondered why Levi – whom Kathy calls her “lover” --  wasn’t with her at the HRC event?

With her trademark razor sharp  humor, Griffin quipped, “Levi actually is in his igloo crying over me because I’m doing ‘The Rules’. If I give him too much at once, then he takes me for granted, but sometimes I come back to these events, and then I’m sure he’ll read about it in the paper.”

When we asked for a sneak preview of what the episode will be about in Alaska, Kathy said, “Here’s what I can say about Levi. Levi might not be at this HRC event with me, but believe me, he’s done more for the gay community than he will ever know.”

We also asked if she really said during a recent standup routine in Alaska that she wanted to push former Alaska governor Sarah Palin down a flight of stairs.

“Oh my gosh, I got so much delicious hate mail about that. I don’t remember if I said it because, you know, my act changes so much I don’t know remember, but I hope I did because it’s outrageous and it got me a lot of ink and I got a lot of really funny hate mail, from you know, the tea partiers, the birthers, and the Palin fanatics, and I love stuff like that, so anytime I can say something outrageous to get myself in the papers is a good thing.”

Then, as Kathy was being hustled along the red carpet and into the ballroom where she was about to be honored, she added, “Besides, I have a long list of people I want to throw down the stairs, not just her. There’s about a hundred people off the top of my head, I’d like to throw down the stairs.”
