Zachary Quinto has come out as a gay man.

The actor who appears as Spock in the new Star Trek movies and who also starred in TV's Heroes, made the revelation in a new interview about his work on Broadway.

Quinto, 34, won raves in Angels in America, a revival of the Pulitizer Prize-winning play set in the early days of the AIDS epidemic.

It was “the most challenging thing I’ve ever done as an actor and the most rewarding” he told New York magazine.

"And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.”

Quinto has played numerous gay roles in the past and has been active in gay causes but he's never previously addressed his own sexual orientation.

He played a gay character on Tori Spelling’s TV show So NoTORIous, and another on the new F/X series, American Horror Story.

In the interview, Quinto took a look at the growing number of states where gay marriage is now legal while at the same time gay teens are being bullied to the point of committing suicide.

"As a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say ‘Why? Where’s this disparity coming from, and why can’t we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?’ We’re terrified of facing ourselves.”

Quinto's next movie is the financial thriller Margin Call, opening Friday.

A CNN anchor has come out -- no, not THAT one  -- rather, Don Lemon told the world that he "was born gay."

Lemon told the New York Times on Sunday that while his colleagues in the news business have been aware of his sexuality for years, cultural implications kept him from revealing his sexuality on a grand scale.

“It’s quite different for an African-American male,” Lemon told the paper. “It’s about the worst thing you can be in black culture. You’re taught you have to be a man; you have to be masculine. In the black community, they think you can pray the gay away.

In a landmark announcement in the sports community, Phoenix Suns president and chief executive Rick Welts has revealed he's gay.

Welts, 58, told the New York Times he informed NBA commissioner David Stern (who'd known, but never broached the issue) of his plans to go public with the info last month, and that Stern was supportive.

Political commentator Rachel Maddow is an open lesbian and is calling her journalist counterparts to come out of the closet as well.

“I’m sure other people in the business have considered reasons why they’re doing what they’re doing, but I do think that if you’re gay you have a responsibility to come out,” Maddow said in a recent interview.

And while many speculate she was referring to CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, the 38-year-old took to her blog today to say it isn’t so.

Fresh off the Golden Globe wins by Glee's openly gay Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer, the show itself is feeling more love, thanks to the annual GLAAD Awards, which honors the entertainment industry for its impact on same-sex equality issues.

GLAAD -- which stands for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation -- released its nominations Thursday for its 22nd annual Media Awards which recognizes not only TV shows, but also films, theater and journalists for their positive depictions of the LGBT community.

Besides FOX's Glee, other TV shows nominated include ABC's Modern Family & Grey's Anatomy, NBC's 30 Rock, AND HBO's True Blood.
