Dominique Strauss-Kahn spoke publicly for the first time since his May 14 arrest on accusations he sexually assaulted maid Nofissatou Diallo at New York's Sofitel hotel, admitting that while he committed a "a moral failure" in his behavior, their encounter was consensual and not violent.

"What happened was not just inappropriate, it was more than that, it was a fault; a fault toward my wife, my children, my friends but also a fault toward the French people who placed in me their hope for change,” he told French news outlet TF1. "It was a moral fault of which I am not proud. I regret it infinitely. I have regretted it every day for the last four months; I don't believe I have finished regretting it."

The ex-International Monetary Fund leader was freed in August after prosecutors dropped all of the charges against him -- attempted rape, sex abuse, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching -- claiming Diallo had killed her credibility after repeatedly changing her story; Strauss-Kahn said Sunday, she "lied about everything."

D.A. To Ask For Dismissal Of Sexual Assault Case Against Dominique Strauss-Kahn

The Manhattan District Attorney's office is going to request the dismissal of all charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn when the former International Monetary Fund head appears in court on Tuesday.

The D.A. will be filing a Dismissal On Recommendation, reports The New York Post.  The filing states his office has no way to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.  Such filings are rare but always granted by the presiding judge, experts say.

Strauss-Kahn, who was also touted as a candidate for the next president of France, was accused of sexual assault by a Manhattan hotel maid last May.

Strauss-Kahn always maintained his innocence, but inconsistencies in the story of the accuser Nafissatou Diallo made it a difficult case to prosecute.

The woman's attorney Kenneth Thompson told The New York Times the D.A. has demanded to see his client on Monday, and he believes it is to advise her that the case is being dropped.

Maid In Dominique Strauss-Kahn Sexual Assault Case Breaks Her Silence

Nafissatou Diallo, the hotel maid who accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexually assaulting her, has finally spoken out.

Diallo, 32, a native of Guinea, has accused Strauss-Kahn of a vicious attack inside his Presidential suite at New York's Sofitel hotel on May 14.

In an exclusive interview with Newsweek, Diallo spared no details in describing being forced to orally copulate the former director of the International Monetary Fund.  She said he also grabbed her crotch with such force, she was still red hours later at the hospital, something her medical records support.

Diallo called Strauss-Kahn a "crazed man."  She said she begged him to stop and tried to fight him off before finally escaping after about 15 minutes.

Strauss-Kahn has said he had consensual sex with Diallo. He is not permitted to leave New York City and has had to surrender his passport while the investigation continues.

The case hasn't been easy for prosecutors once they discovered lies in the alleged victim's background.  She claimed two children instead of one on her taxes in order to get an additional deduction. She also exaggerated the story of her life in Guinea in her 2003 application for political asylum in the U.S.   Ironically, her real story -- she was the victim of genital mutilation and rape -- probably would have won her political asylum without any embellishments.

Diallo's credibility was also seriously called into question by two New York Post articles quoting anonymous sources who said she was a prostitute.  Diallo filed a defamation suit against the newspaper on July 5.

Diallo has never backed down or away from her account of what she says happened in room 2806 that day.

"Because of him, they call me a prostitute," she told Newsweek. "I want him to go to jail."
