Ex-Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates, who gained fame in the 90s presiding over a scandal-plagued department involved in the Rodney King beating and subsequent riots, has died, RadarOnline.com has learned.

The veteran lawman passed away at home in San Clemente, California on Friday after a battle with bladder cancer. He was 83.

Gates ran the LAPD for 14-years and retired after the Rodney King incident which thrust the City Of Angels into worldwide headlines.
