Dane Cook says that "the only thing that really matters, really, is family." That's what made the arrest of his brother on charges that he stole millions from the comic so difficult to stomach.

Dane Cook's Brother Indicted For Theft

Cook opened up in the December issue of Boston magazine, and in a highly emotional interview talked for the first time about what his half-brother Darryl McCauley is accused of doing.

"The words that describe it, I gotta be really careful, but it's betrayal," Cook said.  "It's really a word I never thought I would have [to use] in my life.  I never thought I'd get caught out here in that kind of stuff."

Cook and McCauley, whose mother died of cancer in 2006, grew up together, and Darryl spent a decade as a corrections officer before his little brother began to make it big and asked him to handle his finances.

McCauley, say prosecutors, rang up $1.5 million in American Express charges, bought an $800,000 condo on the coast of Maine where he kept another $800,000 in cash, invested $300,000 into two Florida restaurants....the list goes on.

McCauley Pleaded Not Guilty To The Charges

McCauley goes on trial later this month, and Cook recalled how he felt when he first learned of his brother's alleged theft.

"I just remember how I felt when I heard that my mom was sick, and I didn't think anything could even come near that.  How quickly life changed."
