The cast of Glee accomplished what many musicians would give their roadie for -- over 4 million albums and and 10 million songs sold worldwide.
Journey To Regionals hit the Billboard Top 200 Album chart this week at #1 with a remarkable 152,000 units sold in its debut week. This marks the third consecutive #1 debut for the Glee franchise (Glee: The Music, The Power of Madonna and Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers also debuted at #1). It even managed to beat out the new Twilight Soundtrack.
Also, the Fox’s hit comedy garnered an astounding 11.1 million in audience for its season one finale on June 8 making it the highest rated new series finale this year.
What do musicians think of the phenomenon?
Journey front man rock icon Steve Perry, whose seen some of their hits reach new audiences praised the show by saying “Glee has opened up a international catalog of songwriting and introduced those songs to a whole new generation that would have otherwise never heard them." Interestingly, some rock holdouts, namely Coldplay and Bryan Adams, have now joined the bandwagon.
Glee’s Showstoppers Edges Out Justin Bieber:
To date over 10 million Glee songs have been digitally downloaded and over 4 million Glee albums sold worldwide. This week all five Glee releases occupy slots within Billboard’s top 50 best selling albums (Glee: The Music, Journey To Regionals at #1, Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers at #7, Glee: The Music, Volume 1 at #37, Glee: The Music, The Power of Madonna at #46 and Glee: The Music, Volume 2 at #48).
Glee makes its triumphant return to primetime Tuesdays at 8:00 PM ET/PT this fall on Fox.
