The very first moments of Good Morning America on Thursday weren’t devoted to some major breaking story – instead, it was devoted to the news that co-anchor Diane Sawyer would be leaving the morning show to take over anchoring ABC’S flagship news program, World News, when Charlie Gibson retires at the end of the year.
Sawyer’s co-anchor Robin Roberts turned to her and said: “I just can’t stop looking at you. I’m going to cherish the moments.” Then, addressing the viewers, Roberts added: “Surely you have heard our beloved friend and dear colleague Charlie Gibson yesterday announced his retirement at the end of the year. And My Thelma will be replacing Charlie on World News.”

ABC stunned the news world Wednesday with the revelation that Charlie Gibson is stepping down and being replaced by Diane Sawyer.
Now RadarOnline.com has obtained an email sent by Gibson about his decision.
In an email to his staff, Gibson wrote, in part: "...It has not been an easy decision to make. This has been my professional home for almost 35 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul...The program is now operating at a very accelerated, but steady, cruising speed, and I think it is an opportune time for a transition - both for the broadcast and for me..."
RadarOnline.com also obtained an email from network news prez David Westin. Addressing his news department, Westin wrote: "Diane Sawyer is the right person to succeed Charlie and build on what he has accomplished. She has an outstanding and varied career in television journalism...We are fortunate to have a journalist of Diane's proven ability and passion to step into the important position of anchor for World News..."

ABC is preparing a bombshell announcement Wednesday revealing that Diane Sawyer will replace the retiring Charlie Gibson on the alphabet network's nightly news broadcast, RadarOnline.com has confirmed.
The 63-year-old Sawyer has been with Good Morning America since 1999 when she joined the show to co-anchor with Gibson 66.
Gibson has since become anchor of the network's evening news broadcast.
The New York Post, which first reported the story, says Gibson is retiring.
