Robert Joe Halderman was leading a normal life and apparently happy with his girlfriend Stephanie Birkitt just weeks ago, a neighbor of the man charged with extorting David Letterman told RadarOnline.com.
Birkitt had an ongoing sexual relationship with Letterman years ago, while Letterman was dating the woman who became his wife, and Halderman used that information (without her knowledge) to try to extort the late-night host. But neighbors say as of three weeks ago Birkitt, who works on Dave’s show, and Halderman, a producer for CBS's 48 Hours, Mystery, were together and happy.
In an exclusive interview, neighbor Kevin Lane tells RadarOnline.com, "Joe loved Steph. They seemed very close together.
Halderman Lived Above His Means
"I had drinks at their house a few months ago and I didn't see anything wrong. They kidded around, just like a normal dating couple."
Halderman Pleads Not Guilty
Kevin, a glazier for Connecticut Glass and Mirror, said: "Steph said she worked for David Letterman. She said he was a good boss and she especially enjoyed watching the movies that David got when an actor was coming to promote an upcoming film.
Halderman's Financial Woes
"Joe didn't make any comment about Steph's job. He seemed happy with it. "Joe never seemed to be flush with money. Because of my job, Joe asked me for my advice as he planned to get the front of his house and his chimney fixed.

"I feel especially bad for his nine-year-old son Jimmy. He had been living with Joe ever since Joe bought the house a few years ago. Joe was a great dad to him, they would practice golf on the lawn and maybe shoot some hoops. Steph was really good with Jimmy too and would babysit if Joe had to go somewhere.

"It really hurt Joe two and a half months ago when Jimmy moved to Colorado with Jimmy's mom and go to school there.

David Letterman’s alleged extortionist, Robert Halderman, was attempting to extort money from the talk show host due to financial problems according to police sources.
And it’s no surprise, according to court papers from 2007 it seems the CBS producer has always been living above his means, despite earning a hefty salary.
Halderman Allimony Dispute Papers
During a hearing to determine alimony for his two children with ex wife Patty Montet, Halderman had to list his salary and outgoings, and it looks like he earned a pretty penny from his gig at CBS.
Halderman lives in shabby neighborhood
The papers show Halderman earned $214k per annum, and in addition he received $18,000 non taxable payments from his then live in lover, and woman at the center of the Letterman scandal, Stephanie Birkitt.
Apparently, according to the papers Halderman is also in line for a 3% increase every year as stipulated in his four year contract with CBS. In addition it is stated that Halderman has a healthy 401k account with an estimated projected $1million.
Halderman pleads not guilty
After his alimony payments to his ex-wife Halderman still had a gross income of $150,000, with a mortgage payment of less than $1,000 per month.
Birkitt’s lawyers say that Halderman’s claims that he is struggling financially are down to “mismanagement and extravagant spending” and that his major expenses are not housing and food but credit card payments and repaying a loan to himself from his 401k.
At the time of the hearing Halderman’s credit card debt was to the tune of $40k, half of which represents cash advances.

When asked where all his cash goes to Halderman stated “I don’t know. My life costs money.”
In just two months Halderman spent $20,000 in a cash advance and put another $20,000 on his new credit card.

Stephanie Birkitt, the woman used by Robert Halderman without her knowledge at the center of the David Letterman extortion plot, met Halderman at CBS about 15 years ago, a source close to the situation tells RadarOnline.com exclusively.
At the time, Halderman was in one of his two past marriages, and our source says Halderman did not have a relationship with Birkitt at that time.

A NYPD source has told RadarOnline.com that the suspect under arrest in the David Letterman extortion case is an Emmy-Award winning producer for CBS’s 48 Hours, Robert Halderman.
Halderman, 51, is charged with attempted grand larceny. He will appear in court Friday for his arraignment.
Halderman often went by his middle name Joe and currently has a residence in Connecticut.

A tearful Kristen Chenoweth accepted her Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award for the canceled ABC show Pushing Daises. Chenoweth said, "I don't know why I'm crying." Then went on to announce that now she's unemployed she'd like a gig on Mad Men, The Office or 24.
Jon Cryer, star of CBS' Two And A Half Men deadpanned that he used to think awards were shallow displays of popularity, while now he sees that they recognize achievement. Cryer won for Best Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series.
