Is Brüno savvy social commentary, or offensive polemic? Riotous satire, or simply misguided?

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE:

The DVD, which arrived this week, reveals that it may be all that and more. In new commentary, writer/producer Sacha Baron Cohen tacitly addresses the debate that has swirled around Brüno since it hit theaters last June, revealing his intentions through anecdotes and discussion with director Larry Charles. As the titular star, Cohen plays a gay TV host from Austria who travels to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a big celebrity. Flamboyant, brash and over-the-top, Brüno's interviews intentionally push boundaries and ravage cultural mores, much in the way that Cohen's other alter ego, Ali G, did in his long-running television show and feature film.

Watching our fearless fashionista travel everywhere from a terrorist holdout in the Middle East to a charity PR firm in Los Angeles, Brüno's sexuality is less an end than the means through which Cohen hopes to disguise his ulterior motives. With a penchant for pushing buttons and a German-inflected potty mouth, Brüno distracts his targets with exaggerated mannerisms and outlandish outfits (vinyl is one of his favorite materials). It's not hard to see how Cohen could be criticized for taking his homosexual schtick too far (the tongue-heavy mime scene may be a bit much), but he plays Brüno to such extremes that the character is ultimately just a conduit for the film's real agenda.

DNP Random Things

Who is Sacha Baron Cohen aka Borat/Ali G/Bruno? Is the comedian closer to his Ali G character, or is he more like Borat from Kazakhstan? Or maybe, Bruno, his latest character, is he real man behind the man…well, you get our thrust.

Ask Men has discovered five things we bet you don’t know about Sacha Baron Cohen.

1- Sacha Baron Cohen used to be an actual male model
Behind the Borat mustache, Ali G do-rag and nude ass of Bruno, is an actual good-looking man. Before becoming a comedian, Cohen worked as a male fashion model and he appeared in a number of fashion magazines. His slim, 6-foot-3 figure does make him perfect for that world. Reportedly, the stint inspired Bruno. Just how much nude model ass did he see before he cracked into the character? We wonder if we'd really like to know the answer to that.

Bruno is the top film in America, but don't count on the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy to tear up the box office in the Ukraine -- the culture ministry for the ex-Soviet state announced Wednesday it has "decided to ban all showings of this film on Ukrainian territory."

The ministry said the film presented "artistically unjustified exhibition of sexual organs and sexual relations, homosexual acts in a blatantly graphic form, obscene language, sadism [and] anti-social behavior" in coming to its decision; nine of 14 panel members approved a complete ban on the film.

What's going on at The View?

Bruno, which follows the antics of a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter, made half of its money Friday, with a stellar $14.4 million intake; its Saturday ($8.8 million) and Sunday ($7.2 million) totals fell dramatically, but the film still staved off the aforementioned blockbusters for the box office crown.

Bruno Is Fagulous!

Bruno is ballsy, hysterical and totally offensive (in the good way). But be forewarned: anyone who isn’t completely comfortable with sexuality and/or homosexuality is in for a shock. Forget Brokeback Mountain — this is the swishiest mainstream movie in history.

Straight guys who consider themselves liberal/homo-friendly were visibly uncomfortable during Bruno, which follows Sasha Baron Cohen’s fictional gay, Austrian fashionista character to America as he tries anything and everything to become famous.
