DVD Review: Broken Embraces

Secrets, lies, sex and love: Broken Embraces has it all. Throw in some drug-laced gazpacho, homemade flan and a dark love triangle enshrouded in mystery, and Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film unfolds with the Spanish director’s signature sense of farce and deviance, but with new layers of intrigue and a mind-boggling -- and, one would hope, self-aware -- degree of melodrama.
Penélope Cruz plays Lena, a woman caught between two rich men who fall hopelessly in love with her, playing tug-of-war until her tragic death in a car accident. The film, which arrives on DVD Tuesday, begins 14 years after Lena’s accidental death when her true love, Mateo Blanco (Lluís Homar), is compelled to tell the story to Diego (Tamar Novas), the son of his close friend and former colleague, Judit Garcia (Blanca Portillo). Mateo, it should be noted, is now not only blind (thanks to the accident), but also insists on being called by his unconvincing pseudonym, Harry Caine, in the belief that his when his main squeeze died, so did his former self.

Undercover couple Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz tried to have a quiet drink with Sean Penn and a mystery brunette Friday night, but the boys got so raucous everybody in the room knew they were there -- including RadarOnline.com!

The trio of Oscar winners sat at a secluded table on the outside patio at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles with Penn's date listening to their animated stories.
Penelope, who recently refused to reveal to David Letterman if she is engaged to handsome Bardem, sat with her back to the bar crowd in an attempt not to be recognized. But her low profile ploy was blown by Bardem and Penn who were laughing loudly at each other's jokes. At one point Penelope even had to gently calm handsome Bardem down by holding his arm as he enthusiastically got out of his seat waving his hands.
"Everyone seemed to be having a good time except Penn's date who appeared slightly subdued," our eyewitness said.

Cruz and Bardem first met after working on Jamon Jamon together in 1992. Their romance took off after they appeared on the big screen again in 2008's Vicky Christina Barcelona.
Penn is currently single after splitting with the mother of his two sons, actress Robyn Wright Penn.

Cruz sparked engagement rumours after she was spotted wearing a sapphire and diamond sparkler on her ring finger at the October premiere of Broken Embraces. But when asked by Letterman to confirm, the 35-year-old star said, “I don’t feel comfortable talking about my private life in public."

Penelope Cruz is many things -- an award-winning actress, a beautiful cover girl, and a fashion designer -- but one thing she isn’t is a pro in the kitchen.
“I can cook a little bit. I can cook a few Spanish dishes, but it looks in movies that I cook much better than I cook!” Cruz laughed at a press conference on Thursday in Los Angeles. “The things I can make can taste pretty well but I’m not the most organized person in the kitchen."
