VIDEO: Top Ten Picked On American Idol -- And (Surprise) THREE Wild Cards!

On Thursday's American Idol, the 24 remaining contestants were whittled down to ten finalists by more than 40 million viewer votes, and in a surprising move, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez each got to save someone with a wild card pick, leaving 13 young talents competing for this season's crown. Earlier, everyone thought there would be just two wild cards.

The top ten contestants, as determined by voters, included boys Scotty McCreery, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams and Paul McDonald; and girls Pia Toscano, Lauren Alaina, Karen Rodriguez, Thia Megia and Haley Reinhart.

That brought us to the real suspense of the night, as three lucky contestants would be selected by the judges to get another shot at following in the footsteps of past winners such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

On Wednesday's American Idol, the second of three episodes airing this week, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez checked out the dozen remaining girls, and Pia Toscano stole the show with a jarring rendition of The Pretenders' I'll Stand By You, radiating the same kind of star power Kelly Clarkson did in the show's inaugural season.

After her performance, the entire audience -- including the judges -- stood up and gave Toscano, a 22-year-old New Yorker, a standing ovation for her power ballad.

On Tuesday's American Idol, the first of three special episodes airing this week, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez checked out the dozen remaining male talents, and if you thought the eccentric Aerosmith rocker could make it through these season without letting the F-word slip, you had another thing coming.

Following James Durbin's rockin' rendition of Judas Priest's You've Got Another Thing Comin,’ an impressed Tyler yelled "F---! Holy s---!" in amazement.

The stage is set -- American Idol judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez whittled the pool of contestants to 24 Thursday, indirectly ruining the birthday of Jessica Cunningham, an aspiring singer who’d hoped to make the cut.

Thursday marked Cunningham’s seventh try-out for the Fox hit, but it would not prove to be a lucky number for the Maine native.

The Jenny On The Block singer turned American Idol judge told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show Thursday that eliminating Chris Medina, the Illinois barista with a touching backstory, "was really hard" for her to do on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Lopez broke down in tears after she had to break the bad news to Medina, 26, whose fiancée Juliana is confined to a wheelchair and brain damaged after an October 2009 auto accident.

"After he left it really hit me -- I just couldn't believe I had to deliver this new to someone who's been through enough,” she said.

The search for the next American Idol continued Wednesday at Southern California’s Pasadena Civic Auditorium, where teen Jacee Badeaux stole the show on Hollywood group night.

The talented 15-year-old Lafayette, Louisiana native looked like he was done for early on, as he was booted from a group called The Guaps, and forced to latch onto a different squad, the Sugar Mamas and the Babies. There, he had a much better chance to show off his charisma and talent.

The search for the next American Idol took judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez back to Southern California on Thursday's show, as the show's Hollywood Week kicked off from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, where the star trio had to whittle down the 327 hopefuls they approved during the show's audition phase.

Again, we saw a parade of contestants who look poised to make a good run, with the lethal combination of raw talent and a sob story to tug at the judges' heartstrings.

On Wednesday, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez searched for the next American Idol in San Francisco, where Drew Beaumier spiced up his segment with a little gimmickry, dressing up in a Comic-Con-ready Transformers outfit to off-set his sub-par vocal capabilities.

Beaumier, 24, showed the judges panel he could, literally, transform into a miniature Power Wheels car with motor and all, prompting Lopez to say she "wished her 2-year-old son was here.”

“That's how people are gonna get around in the future, ten more years,” Beaumier said, prior to belting out a pitiful rendition of Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild.

On Wednesday, judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez searched for the next American Idol at AT&T Park, the home of baseball's champion San Francisco Giants, where a few Bay Area hopefuls knocked it out of the park in their auditions.

Host Ryan Seacrest said the show was seeking "golden voices in the golden state," noting that it was just two years ago the San Francisco auditions turned up a golden talent in Adam Lambert.

They may have found their next breakout contestant in 21-year-old Santa Cruz native James Durbin, who possesses two of the keys needed to succeed on TV’s most popular talent show: a harrowing backstory and a strong set of pipes.
