Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron & Tilda Swinton Among Oscar Snubs

The nominees for the 84th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday in Beverly Hills, and while we got a taste of the expected, some notable performances -- including Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron, and Tilda Swinton -- were among those snubbed.

DiCaprio (J. Edgar), Theron (Young Adult), and Swinton (We Need to Talk about Kevin), all Golden Globe nominees, did not hear their names called for the little gold man.

We caught up with veteran entertainment reporter David Viggiano, who gave us his thoughts on other stars who just missed the cut.

George Clooney, Brad Pitt, & Meryl Streep All Get Oscar Nominations While Hugo, The Artist Lead The Pack

The nominees for the 84th Academy Awards were announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Tuesday in Beverly Hills, and while Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Brad Pitt got their expected nods, it was Martin Scorsese's Hugo that led the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, with The Artist right on its tail with ten nods.

Nominees for best picture are: Hugo; The Artist; The Descendants; Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close; The Help; Midnight in Paris; Moneyball; The Tree of Life; and War Horse.

Among the best director picks nominees are Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist; Alexander Payne for The Descendants; Scorsese for Hugo; Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris; Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life.

The nominees for Best Actress are Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs; Viola Davis in The Help; Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady; and Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn. (Notably snubbed was Tilda Swinton, whose performance in We Need to Talk About Kevin was trumpeted by critics as a possible contender to Streep's moving portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.)

Candidates for Best Actor include Demián Bichir for A Better Life; George Clooney for The Descendants; Jean Dujardin for The Artist; Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; and Brad Pitt for Moneyball.

You can almost hear the champagne corks popping!

BridesmaidsKristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, as well as Moneyball’s Jonah Hill and The Help’s Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer are among the first time nominees going into the 84th Annual Academy Awards.

Wiig – who is constantly hilarious on Saturday Night Live -- was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for writing Bridesmaids, along with her writing partner Annie Mumolo. While Wiig did not nab a nomination for Best Actress, her co-star, Mike & Molly’s Emmy winner Melissa McCarthy scored a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

VIDEO: Melissa Leo Drops F-Bomb During Oscar Acceptance Speech

The Fighter’s Melissa Leo should have gotten a bar of soap to accompany her Oscar statuette at Sunday’s Academy Awards, as actress cursed during her acceptance speech after winning the honors for best supporting actress.

"I'm just shaking in my boots here," she said, before thanking her co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale.

"When I watched Cate two years ago, it looked so f **king easy," Leo said in reference to actress Cate Blanchett. (Note: the ceremony was presented on tape delay, and ABC was able to bleep out the offensive phrases.)

The Academy Awards is always a yearbook of what's hot -- not just in the movies, but society as well -- and on Sunday night, producers gave a comedic nod to the auto-tune-fueled viral video epidemic, mashing up a number of the year's films in a medley YouTube sensation Antoine Dodson couldn't have done any better.

Meanwhile, Natalie Portman won Best Actress for her dark turn in Black Swan, making her and Firth the clear Oscar frontrunners.
