Capping off the decade, Julian Casablancas has released a cover of the greatest Christmas song to come out of the past ten years, “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” famously performed by Horatio Sanz on Saturday Night Live.
The notoriously broody Strokes frontman shows us he really does have a sense of humor, giving his peppiest vocal delivery to date, and recording his second most surprising song to date (that Converse commercial with Santigold and Pharrell being the first!). The catchy song is available on iTunes and certain to appeal on every one of the other 364 days a year!
"I think most people can appreciate the sentiment of wishing it was Christmas,” says Julian, “and the blindly naive tone, though tongue-in-cheek, was kinda charming to me.”
Julian has cause to celebrate, being that his 2001 debut with the Strokes, Is This It, is widely considered one of the best albums of the past decade, topping many critics’ end-of-the-decade lists. And after three albums with the Strokes, Julian released his first solo album, Phrazes for the Young, this year to critical praise (“I Wish It Was Christmas Today” is not on the album).
Julian kicks off the next decade with a string of East Coast solo shows in January, hitting Boston, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, followed by two hometown shows at New York City’s Terminal 5. See tour dates below.
