James Caviezel, who played Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, was hospitalized with cuts and bruises after he was involved in an accident in which someone tossed a bicycle in the path of his moving Harley Davidson motorcycle, in Leavenworth, Washington Thursday, police said.

Trooper Rich Magnussen said the 40-year-old actor's injuries "could have been a lot worse" had he not been wearing a helmet, and that the 42-year-old man who tossed the bicycle in the actor’s path might have been suffering from mental issues.

Actor Mel Gibson made an unexpected visit to St. Louis, MI., this week to attend a Catholic Bishops conference and ask church heads to keep him in their prayers.

"I was flabbergasted," Bishop Robert Shaheen of the Maronite Church told St. Louis station KPLR of seeing Gibson.

"He was very kind, very gracious...he never said anything about his personal life except 'keep me in your prayers; I'm going through a bad time in my life.'"

Gibson recently filed for divorce from his wife of 28 years, Robyn.
